UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson Fatally Shot in Targeted Attack in NYC

In a devastating incident, Brian Thompson, the CEO of UnitedHealthcare, was shot and killed on December 5, 2024, in what authorities are describing as a targeted attack. The tragedy occurred outside a Hilton hotel in Midtown Manhattan, where Thompson was attending an investor conference hosted by UnitedHealth Group, the parent company of UnitedHealthcare. He was 50 years old.

According to the New York Police Department, Thompson was shot in the chest and leg by an unidentified assailant and succumbed to his injuries shortly afterward. The suspect fled the scene, and law enforcement has since launched a city-wide manhunt, releasing surveillance images of the individual believed to be responsible.

Detectives are exploring multiple angles to determine the motive behind the attack, including possible connections to Thompson’s role as CEO of the largest health insurer in the United States. Thompson’s wife, Paulette, revealed that her husband had received prior threats, though the nature of those threats remains unclear. Speaking to reporters, she mentioned, “He told me there were some people making threats, but I don’t know the specifics. It might have to do with his job.”
